Jessica Ceja has lived with sickle cell disease since she was a toddler. Last month, she became the first patient at a Maryland hospital to receive Lyfgenia, a gene therapy that uses a patient's own re-engineered stem cells to produce healthy red blood cells. Surrounded by her husband and her care team at the Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center, she began a new chapter.

The road ahead is not over. But it looks different than the one behind.
