World Health Organization African Region's Post

Details

Sickle cell disease symptoms often begin in early childhood. Symptoms include pain crises and anaemia. The disease may also lead to serious complications, including stroke and organ damage.

Over 39,000 people died from sickle cell disease in the African Region in 2021, a 53% increase since 2000.

Through initiatives such as #PENPlus, @WHO is supporting governments to strengthen services for people living with sickle cell disease.
