VAS-101, a topical curcumin gel applied under the tongue, is safe and well tolerated in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD), according to results from a phase 1 pilot study.
The experimental therapy also led to improvements in patient-reported outcomes and functional biomarkers of red blood cells, suggesting that it may have mechanistic and patient-centered benefits.
During the trial, patients with SCD were treated with 0.1 mL of sublingual VAS-101 administered in 2 equal doses separated by 15 minutes twice a week for 4 weeks.
