Silver Spring Woman Becomes First Adult Sickle Cell Disease Patient in Maryland to Receive FDA-Approved Gene Therapy

A 41-year-old Silver Spring woman who has endured debilitating pain crises and frequent hospitalizations throughout much of her life as the result of sickle cell disease has been treated at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) with her own genetically engineered stem cells in an effort to prevent life-threatening complications and achieve a long-term cure. UMMC is the academic flagship hospital of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS).
