Sickle cell disease is a genetic blood disorder that disproportionately affects communities of color — making awareness and early testing critically important. Many people carry the sickle cell trait without knowing it. While sickle cell trait is not the same as sickle cell disease, health experts recommend knowing your status and discussing what it means for you with a medical provider.
