The ministry disclosed the figures Friday as Malawi joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Sickle Cell Day under the theme, “Closing the Survival Gap: Equity in Sickle Cell Disease.” The observance seeks to increase public awareness and understanding of the disease and the challenges faced by patients, families and caregivers.
In a statement signed by Principal Secretary (Administration) Bestone Chisimale on behalf of the Secretary for Health and Sanitation, the ministry said children living with sickle cell disease in Malawi continue to experience high mortality rates, largely due to delayed access to treatment for complications such as malaria, anemia, acute respiratory infections, prematurity, bacteraemia and HIV/AIDS.
