Sickle cell epidemic

The Nation Newspaper

June 19 is the annual date the world marks ‘International  Sickle Cell Day’. The theme for this year’s own is, “Closing the Survival Gap: Equity in Sickle Cell Care”.  Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is often referred to as “black man’s disease” because science has shown that even though the disease is not limited to one race, statistics show that due to genetics and history, more people with black ancestry in Africa, the Americas and Caribbeans are more affected by SCD.

It is often not about race or geography per se but about ancestral genetics.

Nigeria as the most populous black nation logically has more victims of the disease in sub-Saharan Africa.
