Most people have heard of Sickle Cell Disease. Far fewer understand how it is inherited. Or that many individuals carrying the sickle cell trait may never experience symptoms.
Sickle Cell Disease is a genetic blood disorder that affects the shape and function of red blood cells. Instead of being round and flexible, these cells can become rigid and crescent-shaped, restricting blood flow and reducing oxygen delivery to tissues and organs.
The result can be pain episodes, fatigue, infections, and other serious complications.
