Louisiana’s 1st sickle cell gene therapy patient heads home after historic treatment

After six weeks in the hospital, 23‑year‑old Daniel Cressy leaves with hope for a functional cure and a future where he can finally pursue his dream of flying.

Medical history has been made in Louisiana.

On Tuesday, the first person in the state to receive gene therapy for sickle cell disease left the hospital after a six-week-long stay. The hope is that treatment, which fewer than 100 people in the world have had, will help him live a normal, healthy life. The young man says it’s been an emotional journey.
